We are a research center that focuses on working with communities to promote sustainability and climate justice.
What We Mean by Sustainability: Sustainability is a way of life where people share values, traditions, and practices that support Mother Earth, social justice, and overall well-being. This culture can be found in organizations and communities.
About Climate Justice: Climate justice seeks to address the unfair effects of climate change, and inequitable climate actions. Those who have done the least to cause climate change often suffer the most from it. Additionally, actions taken by governments to combat climate change can sometimes make existing inequalities worse, like when people living with low-income are pushed out of their communities due to new “green developments.”
Our Approach: We work with Indigenous and equity-deserving communities, environmental organizations, governments, businesses, and other community members to create practical, collaborative research that supports fair climate actions and sustainability.
What We Research: Our active projects cover many topics, including sustainability culture, climate justice, youth activism, community safety, the effects of climate change on people with disabilities, the green economy, and sustainability in schools. We also explore emotions related to environmental issues and how to manage complex situations.
Our Networks: We are home to the Flourishing Enterprise Institute, which connects global partners to do applied research and share knowledge for creating successful, sustainable businesses. We also help lead the Municipalities Adapting in Response to Complexity (MARC) network, which includes over 200 organizations. MARC focuses on helping local governments manage new challenges and improve their strategic practices. They have three main research areas: Enterprise Evolution, Context-Based Sustainability, and Low Carbon Resilience. Wele'g, meaning living well in Mi’kmaq, creates learning, research, and community connections that respect Indigenous knowledge and traditions. We aim to support cultural strength, land stewardship, and sustainable practices rooted in community wisdom for present and future generations.
